Charlotte, NC Bound and Lessons Learned!
Yesterday was one of those days when you drive 5 hours, spend $70 in gas and end up right where you started. UGH! I dropped the kids off with their grandparents in Chattanooga then promptly returned home to prepare to head to Charlotte, NC for the convention we go to every year. So, with all of this time in the car with me and my thoughts, the day became a list of lessons learned. Bare with me, I'm low on sleep and high on emotion so this should be interesting...

1.  I feel old when driving 65 at night seems too fast and young when driving 70 during the day seems too slow. Those were the speed limits and I did abide by them, but neither felt right. Why is that?

2. Sarah McLachlan and Adele are excellent driving companions for periods of heartbreak. I am dealing with some things right now and they soothed my soul during my long solo trek back home. No crying, just soul searching. Just so you know, it's not with Tony...he is the most amazing man that loves me unconditionally and always stands by me. I am one lucky woman to have him...I know, yuck (sorry).

3. You immediately have to play Beautiful South and sing 36D at the top of your lungs after listening to sad music to pep you up in the car! I have a thing for English alternative rock bands...I admit it.

4. I realized recently that I'm stronger than I thought I was. I have grown a lot over the years and I finally feel like myself. It's kind of a strange realization, but I'm good with me and I'm happy with that feeling.

5. Trying to eat lettuce wraps smothered in mustard while driving is a bad idea. Trust me...not easy driving eats. Mustard was everywhere!

6. My belly has a definite limit on watermelon consumption in one sitting. I love it, but dang...hello watermelon baby! I felt 4 months pregnant for about 3 hours after that. Not comfortable at all. Also, it puts a hurtin' on the bladder. Good thing I waited till I got home to eat it!

7. After driving all that way and baking, packing is the last think you want to do. Oh and cleaning the house is even further down on that list. And um, your butt hurts like crazy!

8. There are never enough sausage balls. I make them every year for the illustrator to have easy eats and word has gotten out! No matter how many double batches you make...there is never enough!

9. Referencing #8 I need to have a booth at that con to make some money on sausage balls!

10. My in-laws are amazing! Seriously, they spoil us like crazy. Oh and by spoil, I mean they brought me two huge bags of apples (fuji and granny smith - my favorites) for my trip. They know me so well because I was going to have to buy some to take with me. It's not so much the apples, but it's knowing me enough to care. Oh and the illustrator got chips...when one gets a treat, so does the other. I love them.

With that, I'm off. I've worked out, I need to finish packing up, our friend is coming over soon to stay and take care of the cats, I've got to run the vacuum and we are off!

What lessons have you learned lately?

The lesson I've learned? What you call a "double batch" of sausage balls is actually a half batch.

Lesson I learned = do NOT overdo it at the gym. You need your energy and muscles for dance practice with upcoming competitions.

What a long day! I'm glad you had good music to tide you over through some driving and soul searching. Music is great for that.

Yesterday I learned if you bat away a bumblebee with your book too hard, it just falls and dies. I feel so bad!

Your road trip sounds a lot like the ones I've had. Good driving "eats" are always trial and error for me. I usually end up with food all over my pants by the time I arrive at my destination... :p

Good luck getting everything done! :) Have a good Thursday!

Love this post and the lessons. It's kind of what you might think running sometimes. I wish I could give you a big hug my friend. I know things are a little hectic (understatement) right now, but they will get better I know it. You've got so much going for you.

Love this list! I imagine the mustard wrap would have been disastrous. LOL!

Totally agree about Adele - are you going to see her in concert?

I'm sorry you're going through a tough time right now. Just remember that every situation is temporary. One month from now you'll be in a totally different mindspace. Keep your head up!

What have I learned lately? That life is never concrete, that nothing is ever static and allowing change to happen can be an exciting (even when its a little scary) experience.

Oh Sarena, I love your spirit!! You have such a beautiful light that shines through! I have learned that it's okay to unplug, okay to neglect the blog, okay to be busy with real life, okay to be stressed and excited at the same time... life is throttling me but in the best of ways! :)

haha, I just read Tony's comment and am cracking up...I don't think I've ever noticed him in the comments before - have I been missing out?! Speaking of him - what you said is so sweet. You two always make me go "awww!"

That sounds like a loooot of time in the car. Not sure I could do it...but I definitely find myself getting into too deep of thoughts while I'm driving, too. Hope everything's okay!

Hell ya on #9! I'd fly out to the conference just for that.

You are awesome, and I'm so glad you are finally aware of it! So happy you got that soul searching time too.

Lessons learned today - The Illustrator knows proper serving sizes and I make damn good smoothies.

    Great lessons and thoughts, Sarena!
I'm sure I have lots of lessons I've learned lately, I just really need some time to think about it...I've got a long car trip ahead of me on Wed, so I'll mull it all over then. Car trips can be good for that, as you know!
