First Day Of School 2010!
I really don't even know where to begin...
last night when it hit the boys they were starting school today...
this morning when I realized how big they were getting (4th and 7th grade)...
or tonight when I had homework?
Let's just go back to dinner last night! Does anyone else ever make fried rice? I swear, it is best with leftovers, but it makes the biggest mess in the kitchen! The illustrator helped me out since it really is his recipe. I didn't have it since it has soy sauce in it, but it smelled amazing. This is actually one of the boys' favorite meals! It's a bonus too that we are getting vegetables into Jay! Although, the illustrator says he wants to do a vegetarian one next time and hold the soy for me! So, I will let you know the deal on that one when we do it. This one was loaded with peas, carrots, snow peas, bean sprouts, brown rice, cabbage and scrambled eggs.
I went a little different direction with all vegetables and some spicy Chinese mustard. Definitely cleared out the sinuses, but in such a good way! Clearly I was in veggie heaven!

So, do you remember 4th or 7th grade? I actually do like it was yesterday! I remember Mrs. Edwards was my teacher in 4th grade and my "boyfriend" was Steven DeGruder. He was my boyfriend because we passed the note back and forth to check off the boxes answering the question of will you be my girlfriend/boyfriend. Besides, we played chase on the play ground. That is proof enough right there. I remember reading "Where the Red Fern Grows" and cried.

Seventh grade was when I moved to Georgia and it was a very awkward time for me. I met two girls , Whitney and Erin, that were fast best friends with me! The three of us were together all the time. Unfortunately, 8th grade came and we were separated by new schools splitting off of ours and different classes.

What do you remember about that time? Anything good?

I started a new school in 7th grade so I remember it WELL. On the 3rd day, we had a retreat to a hiking trip where we all slept together and went white water rafting. That was an interesting way to get to know people.

I moved the summer before 4th grade and started a new school. I think I had a pretty easy transition - the kids were really friendly. 7th grade, all a remember was being scared and wearing Motley Crue t-shirts and thinking I looked cool, despite the scared thing.

I've never made fried rice actually. Your boys look so cute all ready for school! I totally remember both the 4th and 7th grades. The 4th grade was really odd b/c it was an AT/GT (gifted talented) program and we had 2 teachers. It was also the year I met my friend who passed away (that I mentioned in Friday's post). 7th grade was a new school - the original Hot Springs High School, old, cool building and changing of classes.

Awh, happy first day of school! I remember seventh grade very well. I was SO nervous because it was our first year in the junior high and I didn't think I would be able to do normal junior high kid things like finding my classroom or opening my locker! I made it though! :)

aw, bet you were so proud sending your boys off :) you're right - they are getting so grown up!! time flies. and I SO remember 4th and 7th grade. I remember being petrified in 7th about opening lockers, getting to class on time, etc - that was the first grade where it was seperate schedule, change classes by the bell, etc. ohso scary! haha.

Awww, my mom always took "back to school" pictures of us too :-) Hope they have a great year-- I can't believe a new school year is already upon us!

I remember 4th grade I was in love with this boy Zach. Or I thought I was, haha. And I remember failing some geography test which still bogs me to this day. 7th grade? I have to say, 6th-8th grade seems like one whole year ot me. In my memory, those three years sort of read as one.

Your boys look so cute!! Can you believe our kids don't come back until the 23rd?!! I think the entire state of GA is back but us. It's so weird!!

I hated my 4th grade teacher, she was so mean. But now we're friends on facebook (haha) and she doesn't seem so bad anymore. Maybe she was going through menopause or something?? haha!!

7th grade was hands down my most awkward year. People teased me and my friend at lunch and said we were lesbians... ugh. And this bully girl always laughed at my outfits. That was the worst year, thankfully it only got better after that.

Junior high was super dramatic for me. I assume most girls go through it... we were catty!

I hope your boys have a good first week! :)

Pardon me for asking... do you not eat Soy sauce because of the Soy or the Wheat? There are Wheat-free Soy sauces out there. We use La Choy, which doesn't have wheat.

Oh remember 7th grade that is asking a lot, haha. I don't remember to many exact specifics but that it was a good year for me :)

Your boys are so cute! I remember both grades really well. 4th grade was all about Kansas history and I remember Mr. Dillahay taking us to this one room school house and we had to come in costume and everything. Awesome. 7th grade was when we started junior high (elementary school was k-6) and it was actually a great year! I had my first "real" boyfriend and we went on a date to a No Doubt concert. His dad drove us.

if i never ever remember 7th or 8th grade again that would be great. it was a HARD!!!!! time for me. 5'10", smart, a jock, boys didnt want me, girls hated me, I was not exactly a "blend into the woodwork" kid (imagine that!) and diversity is NOT celebrated at age 12 or 13. Ok I am going to stop but yeah, hard times girl.

Be glad you have boys :) I think I cried every day for 2 years at that age. It was awful. I think boys are less that way than girls...hopefully i will be homeschooling skylar & she will not have to endure the Mean Girls at that age like i did!

So cute! Grade 4 was tough because I went from being in a 2/3 split class to a 4/5...had to grow up fast! Grade 7 is our upper year for elem school so was pretty fun.

Your boys are really cute! I was in a all girls school,so no boy related memories for me. But I still remember the fun I had in both grades pretty vividly.

I <3 fried rice. I could just live on it, I think!

Cute little men you have over there!!

    Ahhh fried rice. SO tasty!

I remember all my grades and the 6th was my fave. I loved getting my first real big valentine from the boy I "loved" and feeling all red faced when he made me read it in front of him :)

    xxoo

The picture of your boys just made my ovaries cry! I want boys to send to school!! hahaha!

4th and 7th grade were tough. I was starting new schools both years and didn't have any friends. I hated those grades!

I didn't know you had kids :) They are so adorable, and remind me a lot of my 14 year old brother (he starts eighth grade this year!). I do remember 4th grade, very much. My teacher was Mrs. Henshen and she made me cry in front of the class once. So humiliating. I had a major crush on a boy named Mike, and we "dated" eventually in fifth grade. Boy was I excited!

I do make fried rice sometimes. It's so easy and fun to manipulate :)

I make fried rice occasionally. The husband loves it! I definitely remember 7th grade and moving from my grade school to the HS. I was on the green team (our class was divided into 3 'teams') and spent all my time with my BFF Bethanne.

Ugh, junior high was not my favorite time - no stellar memories there. But afterward was much better :)

Wait a minute - school? August 9th? Isn't it like a month early?

Thank you to everyone! I think they are pretty cute too! They do seem to go back really early, but they get out in May, so really it isn't too bad!

Coleen, I wanted to answer your question...I am allergic to soy and my husband uses gluten free soy sauce since he can't have wheat. I haven't really come up with a good alternative for me, but I think next time we will just add the soy sauce to the individual servings.

I just tried your banana pancakes this morning (only I can't have potato so I used a random assortment of other flours); they were amazing! Even the kids wanted some. :) My boys are going into 4th and 7th too, but they don't start school until the 31st. Thanks for sharing your recipes. I've only been GF/DF/SF for 2 months now and it's great to have options.

Have you tried the wheat free Tamari? Tastes just like soy sauce but no gluten.

    Thanks!
    Heather

Sorry, just saw your post about no soy either. Haven't delved into your site but are you a strict vegetarian? If not you could try fish sauce...smells awful but adds a wonderful flavor to stuff.
